Celebrating Our Mathematics Journey at East Park Primary

At East Park Primary, we are proud to celebrate the incredible progress made in uniting two schools into one cohesive learning community. One of our most significant achievements has been the alignment of our approaches to the teaching of mathematics. By bringing together the very best practices from both schools, we have developed a clear and ambitious Mathematics Journey that ensures consistency, excellence, and high expectations for every child.

Our journey is firmly rooted in the Five Big Ideas of Mastery—coherence, representation and structure, mathematical thinking, fluency, and variation. These principles are integral to our daily teaching and learning, shaping lessons that are purposeful, engaging, and accessible for all.

Our dedicated staff work tirelessly to create lessons that not only build fluency but also foster confidence and resilience. At East Park, we want every child to see themselves as a mathematician—able to reason, problem-solve, and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. Through our shared vision and commitment, we are empowering our learners to thrive and succeed in mathematics, both now and in the future.

Together, we have laid strong foundations for a culture of collaboration and excellence. This is just the beginning of an exciting journey, and we look forward to continuing to inspire a love of mathematics across our school community.

Quotes from children

Maths lessons are always fun at East Park Primary. Mrs Davis explains it really, really, well making sure that anyone and everyone understands. She gives us the best tips with the easiest way to remember. With our SATs coming up, she prints us previous SATs questions for us to try. We also have a brilliant APP called Doodlemaths. It’s really helped me with my maths, and we get certificates if we are the top Doodler which Mrs Davis sorts out. (Freya)

I love Maths! It’s one of my favourite lessons! Learning about numerals that we use in everyday life is fascinating. This term, we are learning about fractions. Fractions are similar to decimals, but each can use different visuals. Maths is fun as it is 45-50 minutes of education, discussing and solving problems with friends and using my knowledge is more than good enough for me – in facts it’s great! (Zak)

Maths lets me thrive and is a source that can help you throughout your life. In everyday life you use maths. Maths is fun as there’s a challenge and things you haven’t learnt. Well that’s my perspective of maths so if you take pride in it it becomes fun 😊 (Lucy)

I really enjoy the arithmetic focus at the start of every lesson (Brooke)
